Self Inflating Sleeping Pads Review 2018

Getting a great sleep while you are out enjoying nature is extremely important to ensure you have enough energy to continue on your wilderness adventure. Many hikers and campers struggle with getting a good nights sleep even when they are completely exhausted.

This is why it is so important to have the proper self inflating sleeping pad. Sleeping pads provide your body with extra comfort to ensure that you are getting a good night’s rest. Self inflating sleeping pads also provide extra insulation from the cold that seeps up through the ground. If you are camping in a colder environment I would highly suggest purchasing a sleeping pad for extra safety.

We have searched the internet and tested dozens of self inflating sleeping pads in order to compile the best list of self inflating sleeping pads.

Self Inflating Sleeping Pad Criteria

Price: Inflatable sleeping pads come in a wide variety of prices. You can get a cheap pad for somewhere around $20 or you can purchase a higher quality pad that will allow you to explore nature in comfort. Many backpackers and campers are willing to spend a little extra money for a self inflating sleeping pad that they are planning on using quite often.

Weight: If you are backpacking, this criteria is especially important to you. It is important to keep the weight of your items down if you are going to be carrying them a great distance. The lighter your backpack is the more comfortable you will be on your backpacking trip.

Warmth: Your sleeping pad can be used as an extra layer of protection between you and the cold ground. The R-value of a self inflating sleeping pad measures how well it will insulate your body from the cold ground. The higher the R-value is the more insulated the sleeping pad is. If you are backpacking or camping in a winter like climate it is important to get a sleeping pad with a higher R-value. If you just enjoy being warm while you sleep we also recommend getting a sleeping bad with a high R-value.

Length: It is important to find a self inflating sleeping pad that will provide you with the proper support, especially in your hip and shoulder region. Some backpackers will use sleeping pads that are only the length of their torso to keep the weight of their backpack down. If you are more interested in camping in comfort we suggest getting a sleeping bad that is full-length and will support you whole body all the way down to your feet.

Width: Choosing the right width for your self inflating sleeping pad is an important criteria to consider. People who sleep on their sides are typically fine with using a sleeping pad that is a bit narrower. If you prefer sleeping on your back we suggest getting a sleeping pad that is a bit wider to ensure proper support. The additional width, however, does add extra weight to your backpack.

Thickness: Typically the thicker your sleeping pad is the more comfortable it will be. The great thing about self inflating sleeping pads, is that they are not bulky and will most likely fit on the inside of your bag unlike other sleeping pads that have to be strapped to the outside. All of the air pads that we recommend are highly packable and very easy to carry inside of your backpack.
